Work permit for foreign students in Spain
Many international students who come to Spain want to combine their studies with part-time work. But is it legally possible to work as a foreign student? What requirements must be met? In this clear and up-to-date guide, we explain how to obtain a work permit for students in Spain, with all the details you need to know.
Can I work as a foreign student in Spain?
Yes. If you have a valid student visa, you can legally work while studying, but under certain specific conditions. Spanish law allows foreign students to work part-time as long as the work activity does not interfere with their studies.
This applies to undergraduate, master’s, doctoral students, as well as students in specialization or exchange courses.
Types of work permits for students
There are two main options for foreign students who want to work in Spain:
1. Work authorization for internships (curricular or extracurricular)
- No additional permit is required if the internship is part of the curriculum (curricular internships).
- For extracurricular internships, the company must apply for a residence permit for internships.
- The internship must be related to your studies and signed through an agreement with the university.
2. Work authorization for employment (regular job)
- You can work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year.
- The contract must be compatible with your class schedule.
- The hiring company must apply for the work permit at the Foreigners’ Office.
- The contract duration cannot exceed the length of your student visa.
Important: You cannot work as a freelancer (self-employed) with a standard student visa.
Requirements to obtain the work permit
Both you and the hiring company must meet certain requirements:
- Have a valid student visa.
- Be enrolled in an official institution in Spain.
- Prove that the work activity is compatible with your studies.
- The company must present a specific job offer, sign a contract, and apply for the authorization.
- The job position must not be permanent (it is temporary and limited to your study period).
Where to apply for the work permit?
The application is made at the Foreigners’ Office in the province where the company is located. The hiring company manages the process, but you can follow up on it.
The processing time usually takes about one month, and if there is no response within that time, it is considered approved by administrative silence (positive silence).
Can I work full-time during holidays?
Yes. During non-academic periods (summer, Christmas, Easter), you can work full-time, as long as the duration of your student visa is respected.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience, improve your Spanish, and save money.
What about after finishing your studies?
Once your studies are completed, you can apply for a residence permit to look for work (formerly known as the “practice year”) or change your status to a regular work permit if you find a suitable job offer. This transition must be made before your student visa expires.
